FUNCTION: Past, Present and Failure.
During the rebellion of 2024, the planetary resources have been exhausted due to corporate greed, mismanagement, and over harvesting. All but a few of earths' inhabitants have fled the planet. Corporations were in control. The remaining colonies that stayed behind have struggled to survive, by what ever means neces- sary. With the loss of most technologies, the colonies returned almost over night to the stone ages. The Library of Congress has burnt down, the internet is a distant memory. Only the scraps of generations past remain. Scavaging the in-hospitable landscape for food, weapons, tools, memorabilia, anything to hold their society together, the survivors are forced to create out of necessity. To safeguard what few historical artifacts remain of their post-historical lives, and as a guide for the hopeful return of the people of earth, the survivors have compiled this archive. On display are forms of communication, survival tools, information devices, and historical artifacts.
Past, Present, and Failure is a visual journey of the remaining artifacts of a post-apocalyptic world, represented in a visitor's center type atmosphere. This is an observation of the function and dysfunction of a consumer driven society, through the repurposing and re-creation of technologies past. These antiquated technologies are used to draw parallels between disposable objects and elements, of society to create an interactive visual journey. The repurposing and recycling of objects considered obsolete challenges participants to reconsider ideas and values lost to time. Past, Present, and Failure encourages the viewer to interact with the art.
